This meeting convened a group of industry, academic, and government officials with expertise in wind power, hydropower, and utility and transmission system planning and operation. Their purpose was to discuss the potential for coordinated operation of wind and hydropower in serving load, the benefits and detriments in doing so, and to identify the related opportunities and issues. As a result of this meeting and interactions with the IEA Hydropower IA, a recommendation was made to IEA Wind to establish a formal research task to address the myriad of questions and unresolved issues pertaining to the topic. Subsequent to this meeting, in 2004 IEA Wind established a research and development task to investigate the potential for integrating wind and hydropower resources on the electrical grid. The research task, also known as an " Annex, " was the twenty-fourth such task established by IEA Wind, and was entitled: " Task 24: Integration of Wind and Hydropower Systems. " Seven member countries of IEA Wind joined the task: The primary purposes of Task 24 were to conduct cooperative research concerning the generation, transmission, and economics of integrating wind and hydropower systems, and to provide a forum for information exchange. The former of these two purposes was addressed through case study projects performed at participating institutions within each member country. The latter purpose related to information exchange was accomplished via a series of collaborative R&D meetings, seven of which were held: a kickoff meeting The Task 24 Final Report summarizes and presents the results of the work conducted by the task participants, the important issues and analysis methods identified, and the related …

Integration of Wind and Hydropower Systems: Results of IEA Wind Task 24s
In May of 2004, the IEA Wind Implementing Agreement (IA) established R&D Task 24, “Integration of Wind and Hydropower Systems.” Australia, Canada, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States joined Task 24 with the goal of collaborating in the study of wind integration in a variety of electrical system configurations (load, generation, and transmission); hydro system configurati...
متن کاملEstimating the impacts of wind power on power systems---summary of IEA Wind collaboration
Adding wind power to power systems will have beneficial impacts by reducing the emissions of electricity production and reducing the operational costs of the power system as less fuel is consumed in conventional power plants. Wind power will also have a capacity value to a power system. However, possible negative impacts will have to be assessed to make sure that they will only offset a small p...
متن کاملMulti Objective Scheduling of Utility-scale Energy Storages and Demand Response Programs Portfolio for Grid Integration of Wind Power
Increasing the penetration of variable wind generation in power systems has created some new challenges in the power system operation. In such a situation, the inclusion of flexible resources which have the potential of facilitating wind power integration is necessary. Demand response (DR) programs and emerging utility-scale energy storages (ESs) are known as two powerful flexible tools that ca...
متن کاملTwo-Stage Stochastic Day-Ahead Market Clearing in Gas and Power Networks Integrated with Wind Energy
The significant penetration rate of wind turbines in power systems made some challenges in the operation of the systems such as large-scale power fluctuations induced by wind farms. Gas-fired plants with fast starting ability and high ramping can better handle natural uncertainties of wind power compared to other traditional plants. Therefore, the integration of electrical and natural gas syste...
متن کاملPotential impact of global warming on river runoff coming to Jor reservoir, Malaysia by integration of LARS-WG with artificial neural networks
Background: Changes in temperature and precipitation pattern seriously affect the amount of river runoff coming into Dam Lake. These changes could influence the operating conditions of reservoir systems such as Jor hydropower reservoir system (Malaysia) with the total capacity of 150 MW. So, it is necessary to analyze the effect of changes in weather parameters on the river runoff and consequen...
